New York Marathon Canceled for 2020
It is the world’s largest marathon and my favorite race of all time. This year, we won’t be able to run it which is not surprising after watching many of the mayors and local races getting canceled. However, runners across the globe are disappointed and bummed about the NYC Marathon being canceled for 2020. NYRR offered great options for runners who are registered for the New York Marathon this year. Here is a quick rundown of all the facts you need to know:
The New York Marathon is officially canceled
There were many rumors that it was only a matter of time until NYRR would announce the cancellation of the NYC Marathon for 2020 and on June 24th they made it official. This is the third World Marathon Major to be canceled in 2020. The London Marathon, rescheduled for October 4, and the Chicago Marathon, scheduled for October 11, are still on to take place later in the fall.
As we all know the 2020 TCS NYC Marathon was going to be the 50th running of the NYC Marathon, which started in 1970. Now the big celebration will take place on November 7, 2021.
“Canceling this year’s TCS New York City Marathon is incredibly disappointing for everyone involved, but it was clearly the course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective,” Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of NYRR, said in a release published on June 24th. “Marathon Day and the many related events and activities during race week are part of the heart and soul of New York City and the global running community, and we look forward to coming together next year.”
So what does that mean for registered runners? Will there be a virtual NYC Marathon instead like the Boston Marathon is planning on doing for this year?
2020 TCS New York City Marathon Cancellation: Your options
If you are a registered runner for 2020 you have the following options after the marathon has been canceled for this year:
- Receive a full refund (selection is final and cannot be changed) – Once a refund is processed, it should appear as a credit on the card to which it was charged within 5-7 business days.
- defer your entry to 2021, ’22, or ’23 races
- Donate the value of your entry fee to support NYRR’s free youth and community programs (tax-deductible donation)
More info is expected to be announced by mid-July and communicated directly with the runners. Note: Streakers and 15+ Marathoners will not receive credit for the canceled 2020 TCS New York City Marathon, but their streak will remain intact.
What if I received entry through a charity?
If you gained entry through a charity or tour operator should reach out beginning July 1 to that organization for the options available to them. For now, there has not been any more information announced on this topic.
Will there by a virtual NYC Marathon in 2020?
NYRR said that there will be a virtual NYC marathon in 2020, which runners can complete between October 17 and November 1. More details will also be shared in July. More info will be announced shortly as well.
Will there be a medal and a T-Shirt?
I’m personally not a fan of receiving a shirt and a medal for races I didn’t run but I know some of you guys love the memories and are super hyped receiving at least that when you won’t be able to run the race. For the canceled New York Marathon for 2020 race shirts, bibs, and medals will not be distributed.
If you are not affected by the cancelation because you simply weren’t registered for the 2020 NYC Marathon, here is a way how to get a spot for the race in 2021.
