Marathon runners have to strong lately while races are being canceled or postponed. The most breaking news about the Berlin Marathon being canceled for the end of September is not encouraging for what’s still ahead of us.
Berlin Marathon 2020 has been canceled
According to several news reports from German news sources such as Tagesspiegel.de and SZ.de this year’s Berlin Marathon has been canceled. The officials just posted on the Berlin Marathon Instagram that they have learned from the press conference of the Berlin Senate on April 21, 2020, that all events with more than 5,000 persons will be prohibited until October 24, 2020. Unfortunately, this also applies to the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2020, which now can’t take place on September 27, 2020, as planned.
They are also saying that they now have to deal with the consequences and will coordinate further steps to inform the running community once they have more information for us.
Is the Boston Marathon at risk too?
As this is the first cancelation for a race that would have taken place later in the year, it now questions all rescheduled races like the Boston Marathon or London. Will they even take place in the fall or is the cancellation of the Berlin Marathon the first sign that runners probably won’t see any larger running events this year anymore? I will keep you guys posted on more information as this is an ongoing situation.
