I get regularly asked about my morning routine and how I make time to work full time, prep my food, run my blog, coach clients and get my own workouts in. Well, it’s all about excellent planning, scheduling and dedication. I’m a real morning person. Working out in the morning prepares me for the day.
I know some of you guys struggle to get up early in the morning, so let’s talk about what makes it easier to become an early bird just like me and what exactly you can do to make time for a workout in the morning.
Up and at it
One of the things I have learned over the years is to forget about the snoozer on my alarm. When it rings, I get up. No excuses. No extra one minute relaxing. It just makes it worse. I could only get 5 hours of sleep the night before, when my alarm rings I leave the bed. The secret behind it is that if you press “snooze” it becomes easy to talk yourself out of getting up to workout.
If you just can’t jump out of bed the second your alarm goes off, don’t feel bad. To make it easier to get out the door each morning, keep your routine as simple as possible. You don’t need to be up at sunrise to squeeze in a morning workout. Just do a little preparation the night before.
You could do this by:
- Before bed: Pack your gym clothes and have your bag ready to leave.
- If you can, get some natural light into your bedroom. It’s much harder to get up when your bedroom is dark.
- Prepare your breakfast the night before. Grab it. Ready and go. Read my delicious overnight oats recipe here.
- No emails, social media or texts right after you woke up. Don’t get stuck on your phone. It wastes time.
- Prepare your lunch for the next day the night before as well.
Sometimes it can get really tight in the morning which is why I plan shorter workouts in the morning such as HIIT, shorter run or abs and leave the longer (and harder) ones such as leg workouts and other weight lifting workouts for the night. My long runs are always scheduled for the weekend. I figured that my mind needs to be completely relaxed knowing I’ll have all the time in the world when I go for a long run.
I’m also using a little journal where I plan my workouts for the week and adjust them to my job schedule. There is always time for a workout in the morning for me, even when it means I have to wake up an hour earlier. But I’m not going to lie, it’s hard sometimes. And if you aren’t a morning person, the first few weeks as you adjust to the early morning workouts will be horrible.
Reinforce yourself with positivity. Give yourself small rewards for making that extra effort. Treat yourself with your favorite green juice at your favorite juice spot. The best reward is the feeling you’ll getting after you’re done. Think about it: by the time you’ll be on your way to work, you already ran a few miles or completed a great workout at the gym. You’ll feel amazing and energized for the whole day which will make you sticking to your new routine. The whole day is ahead of you because you have woken up earlier. Let me know how it goes.
